Man-made disaster in Dalit colonies of Dharmapuri district

Greetings, please find below the report of the Violence Against Dalits in Dharmapuri District on 7th November 2012. The affected people are living without any assets, so POPE is planning to involve in Relief process for this helpless people by the means of cloths, mats, school bags, notebooks, cooking vessels etc.

 

I am requesting your mercy for these affected Dalits.

Mesdames, Messieurs,

 

Veuillez trouver ci-dessous notre rapport concernant les violences à l'encontre des Dalits dans le district de Dharmapuri le 7 novembre 2012. Les personnes touchées ont perdu tous leurs biens, ainsi POPE prévoit de se porter au secours de ces pauvres gens en leur procurant des vêtements, des nattes, des cartables, des cahiers, des ustensiles de cuisine, etc.

The south-east of India is hit by Cyclone Nilam

 

Le cyclone Nilam a frappé la côte Est de l'Inde

We have very strong rain since yesterday, we had a big storm and cyclone formed in Bay of Bengal near Chennai. The Governments of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry announced the Government Holiday today. The Cyclone hit severely the Northern districts of Tamilnadu and also Pondicherry. It starts to move from sea at 4.30 pm and we are having big storm and rain, the losses in the coastal belt are not yet calculated. The both state Governments announced one day more holiday for the Educational Institutions and Colleges.

Il pleut très fort depuis hier, nous avons eu une grosse tempête et un cyclone s'est formé dans la baie du Bengale près de Madras. Les gouvernements du Tamil Nadu et de Pondichéry ont annoncé que les élèves seront en vacances aujourd'hui. Le cyclone a frappé durement les régions du nord du Tamil Nadu et de Pondichéry également. Il a commencé à se déplacer vers 16 heures 30, nous avons de gros orages et de grosses pluies, les pertes sur la côte ne sont pas encore évaluées. Les gouvernements des 2 Etats ont annoncé un jour de fermeture supplémentaire de tous les établissements scolaires.

Fortunately the Nilam Storm has not affected to much the Tamil Nadu but it destroyed few places in Andhra Pradesh.

 

The cyclone killed eight people in Tamil Nadu and three in Andhra Pradesh. It also destroyed more than 200 electric posts and about 100 trees were uprooted in Chennai. About 3,800 people have been evacuated in Mahaballipuram.

 

Chennai Law colleges exam has been postponed.

Heureusement, Nilam n'a pas trop touché le Tamil Nadudu mais il a détruit des centaines de maisons ainsi que des centaines d'hectares de champs de coton ou de riz en Andhra Pradesh.

 

Le cyclone a tué huit personnes dans le Tamil Nadu et trois dans l'Andhra Pradesh. Il a également détruit plus de 200 poteaux électriques et environ 100 arbres ont été déracinés à Madras. Environ 3.800 personnes ont été évacuées à Mahaballipuram.

 

Les étudiants en droit de Madras ont vu leurs examens reportés.

Women empowerment programme

 

The objectives of this program are:

 

  • To organise the Dalit women into self help groups for their group dynamics and development. 
  • To develop the decision making capacity and leadership skill to the Dalit women
  • To equip the Dalit women for organizing collective action programme and to develop them through Rights Based Approach (RPA).
  • To develop the socio health status of Dalit women for their better living.
  • To increase the earning capacity of rural Dalit women towards their sustainable livelihood.

 

Formation of women’s self help group

POPE has formed 22 Self Help Groups among Dalit women through following the given below process:

 

  • Conducting evening meeting, at least minimum two meetings in each village.
  • Identification of village leaders, formal and informal leaders, both men and women.
  • Building rapport with the community.
  • High lighting women’s problems and village issues.
  • Discussion on the need for organizing self help groups among women.
  • Preparing guidelines on the functioning of self help groups.
  • Discussion on the roles and responsibilities of office bearers of SHGs and members.
  • Selection / Election of office bearers in the democratic ways.
  • Conducting weekly meetings.
  • Recording the meeting minutes.
  • Collection of regular savings.
  • Internal credit rotation.
  • Discussion on women issues.
  • Health intervention education.
  • Utilization of Government health, development and welfare services.

  • The saving amount was utilized to the members of SHG as credit for the following purpose
  • Treatment of disease
  • Replacement of housing roofs
  • Children’s education
  • Meeting family needs of emergency

  • Procuring the seasonal agricultural commodities like rice / groundnuts etc., for better price after the harvesting period.
  • Purchase of livestock animals
  • Purchase of family assets
  • Construction of low cost latrines etc

Collective action programme

Women are organized together to raise their voice in the following ways:

 

 

R.D.O. Office, Tiruvannamalai:

 

Women’s procession was organized and insisted against the women rights violation among Dalit women and a petition was given to Revenue Divisional Office at Tiruvannamalai. They have brought the atrocities against women to the district level offices for intervention and making appropriate policies. A press meet was also organized. The women got training and practice to meet the Government official to explain their needs and problem.

 

 

Land Rights struggle at District Collectorate:

 

Dalit women were organized to raise their voice to get back their D.C. lands, which was given to the Dalits during British period. A written memorandum was given to the District Collector to intervene immediately to get back their D.C. land. A procession was organized, followed with the press meet. The women were understanding and learned the legal procedure to conduct programmes to explore their demands through press meeting, official meeting and voice raising.

 

 

Walk for Drinking Water:

 

Women were organized to have a walk for water. Women were affected due to drinking water problems. They have to walk for long distance to fetch water. Press meet was organized on the following issues:

 

1.   Violation of fundamental rights among Dalits.

 

2.   Need for Road to reach to funeral ground which was kept for Dalits.

 

3.   Land redistribution for Dalits.

 

4.   Prevent illegal alcohol production and selling.

 

5.   Demanding burial grounds for Dalits.
